How sales tax rates stack up

A combined sales tax rate adds together the state rate and any county, city and special district rates. That's why two stores in the same state can charge different tax.

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon (some Alaska towns charge a local tax). Many states tax groceries and prescriptions at a lower rate or not at all, so check what applies to your purchase.

Questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the rate as a decimal. $80 at 8.25% is $80 × 0.0825 = $6.60 tax, for a total of $86.60.

How do I remove sales tax from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100 before tax.
